The gorgeous Wye River, voted the best river in England & Wales 2011 by the Our Rivers Campaign, carves its way through some of the most spectacular countryside in this part of the UK. The winding valley has deservedly become a mecca for walking enthusiasts and the very ambitious can embark on a 136-mile walk from Chepstow to Plynlimon, the highest point in the Cambrian Mountains.
The scenery is truly breathtaking – rugged mountains and tranquil valleys lay side by side with glacial lakes, picturesque villages and nature reserves with all manner of wildlife at home in their natural habitat. The less ambitious may choose to follow the woodland paths along the celebrated Lower Wye Gorge that pass through Tintern and its famous Abbey between Chepstow & Monmouth. The dramatic ebb and flow of the river makes navigation by boat a real adventure.
